As plastic surgeons we armed with tools to affect a lot of different things. We are also charged with knowing when to say NO! Too many of us are guilty of trying to give a patient a result so that they can look like a celebrity. Previously reserved for cartoons, women are wanting ridiculous breasts, butts, lips….you name it. They want to look FanPlastic! Restoring anatomy is a common tenant in reconstruction and is relative in aesthetic surgery as well. Creating augmented, unnatural results is not what we should be doing in my opinion.
Most of my patients want procedures done so that they can look cute in certain tops and various outfits. Many are trying to regain the figure they had before pregnancies. Some of my younger patients have never had the self-confidence they desired and have very reasonable expectations. On the other hand, some have lost some of their identity with facial aging and simply want to turn back the clock. In short, they want their result to be fantastic so that they can feel proud and confident. In many cases they want their friends to think so as well. Let’s be honest, there is a point in life where women dress to impress men, but most of my patients are more concerned about their self-esteem and the approval of their girlfriends.
